What Is HeartMath?
HeartMath is a system of techniques, models, and biofeedback technologies for emotional self-awareness, stress resilience and self-regulation, coined by the Heart Math Institute.
It is a scientifically supported method for creating the optimal state of heart brain coherence. Heart brain coherence is the alignment of your thoughts, emotions and physiological state.
Research shows that improving heart-brain coherence, where the heart’s rhythmic activity becomes more ordered and harmonious with brain function, positively influences cognitive performance, emotional stability, autonomic nervous system balance and overall wellbeing.
Here at FlowEssence, we are able to assess your level of heart brain coherence in real-time by using biofeedback technology to measure your heart rate variability (HRV). This can also be measured over time to ensure you are operating at that optimal and aligned coherent state.
What Does a Typical Session Involve?
During a HeartMath session, individuals learn targeted breathing techniques combined with heart-focused attention exercises. These methods help to increase HRV coherence, reducing stress responses and promoting a calm, focused state. Biofeedback technology is sometimes used to provide real-time feedback on heart rhythms, enabling precise self-regulation training.

Sessions can be tailored to individual needs and often include components of Breathwork and Meditation to optimise physiological and psychological wellbeing. This integrated approach addresses both autonomic nervous system regulation and mindfulness, enhancing emotional resilience and mental clarity.
Sessions can be offered as one-to-one, in groups or within a corporate setting. Heart Math techniques are also a core part of our regular Just Relax group classes.
